Job description

The Faculty of Humanities, Department of Philosophy, is, due to the temporary replacement of a lecturer for a maximum period of three years, looking for a lecturer (docent) in the field of Political and Social Philosophy.  

The faculty offers lecturers and assistant professors the opportunity to collaborate with leading researchers at research institutes that - partly as a result of their multidisciplinary approach - are world-renowned. Moreover, you will be teaching in a dynamic context in which new educational methods are being developed. Together with new assistant professors you will participate in a comprehensive introductory programme, which includes earning the 'basic training qualification’ (BKO).

Job description

The ideal candidate will cover contemporary debates in Political and Social Philosophy and will have one or more historical areas of competence. She/he will have published and/or forthcoming contributions in international peer-reviewed journals and/or with renowned publishers, testifying a promising research profile.

The candidate should have experience with teaching inspiring courses both at MA and BA level and is expected to (co-)teach introductory courses in Political and Social Philosophy. The selected candidate will be part of the Philosophy and Public Affairs research group and expected to participate in and contribute to the activities of that group and of the department, ranging from research seminars to committee memberships and grant applications.

Requirements

  • PhD in Philosophy defended or accepted for defense at the date of application;
  • broad background in philosophy and specialization in Political and Social Philosophy;
  • published or forthcoming works in international peer-reviewed journals and/or with renowned publishers;
  • documented teaching skills at undergraduate and graduate level;
  • teaching experience and experience with thesis supervision within the area of Political and Social Philosophy;
  • experience with obtaining external funding is a plus;
  • a thorough command of Dutch and English. If the candidate's native language is not Dutch, she/he must learn it preferably within 1 year but at most within 1.5 years (in order to (co-teach) some of undergraduate courses in Dutch).

Appointment

The appointment will be on a temporary basis in accordance with the  Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU). The gross monthly salary will range from €2,476 (scale 10) to €5,171 (scale 12), based on a full-time appointment (38 hours a week) depending on the level of teaching experience.
