Job description |
The Capital University Department of Religion and Philosophy invites applications for a tenure-track, assistant professor of Philosophy with broad, generalist training and a concentration in ethical thought, an interest in interdisciplinary discourse that explores the intersection of philosophy with other disciplines, and a commitment to liberal education, undergraduate teaching, and scholarship. Philosophy at Capital University is a historically robust program that is in the process of rebuilding after the recent loss of long-term, senior faculty. The successful candidate will carry a 12-credit hour semester teaching load and regularly instruct the ethics course in the university’s general education program. Candidates are expected to hold a doctorate in philosophy (an ABD will be considered if the doctorate will be awarded by August 2016). Founded in 1830 and chartered in 1850, Capital University is a comprehensive, independent university grounded in the Lutheran tradition with 60 undergraduate majors and four graduate programs (Nursing, Business, Music, and Law). Capital serves approximately 2,700 undergraduates on a beautiful campus in the community of Bexley, five miles east of downtown Columbus, Ohio, and approximately 750 graduate and professional students. Capital University’s Law School is located just minutes from the main campus and close to the city center. Capital University is part of the socially and ethnically vibrant community in Columbus, OH, with the benefits of a modest cost of living and high standard of living with a wide range of cultural assets. Capital University is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and has a long-standing commitment to higher education and free inquiry. Application Process: Interested candidates should send 1) a curriculum vitae, 2) unofficial copies of all academic transcripts, 3) examples of teaching effectiveness and scholarship, 4) three letters of recommendation, and 5) a letter of interest describing the applicant’s educational philosophy and commitment to liberal education. Candidates who wish to be considered for interview at the 2016 American Philosophical Association Eastern Division Meeting in Washington, D.C. must submit their completed application by November 15, 2015. The review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. The position will begin in August 2016.
