Job description

The University of Connecticut (UConn) is entering a transformational period of growth supported by the $1.7B Next Generation Connecticut (http://nextgenct.uconn.edu/) and the $1B Bioscience Connecticut (http://biosciencect.uchc.edu/) investments and a bold new Academic Plan: Path to Excellence (http://issuu.com/uconnprovost/docs/academic-plan-single-hi-optimized_1).  As part of these initiatives, UConn has hired more than 450 new faculty at all ranks during the past three years.  We are pleased to continue these investments by inviting applications for a joint faculty position in the Department of Philosophy and the Asian and Asian American Studies Institute at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The Department of Philosophy is among the top 20 departments at public universities in the nation.  It actively engages in research in philosophical logic, Africana philosophy, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, metaphysics, epistemology, moral philosophy, political philosophy, philosophy of mathematics, feminist philosophy, early modern philosophy, and aesthetics, among other areas. Housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Asian and Asian American Studies Institute at the University of Connecticut is a multidisciplinary research and teaching program. Distinguished by its global, diasporic, national, regional, and transnational orientations, the Institute brings two traditionally distinct fields of inquiry together in dynamic conversation:  Asian Studies and Asian American Studies. The Institute’s research output and course offerings engage Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas not as static, monolithic sites but rather as sets of shifting historical, geographic, and geopolitical zones of interaction, struggle, and cooperation.

This Assistant Professor (tenure track) is a joint position in Philosophy and the Asian and Asian American Studies Institute, with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2016; teaching load 2 + 2. AOS: Asian Philosophy. AOC: Open. Duties include research, teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, service, and outreach. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research and scholarship through high quality publications, presentations, etc.  In the area of teaching, the successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, development of innovative courses and mentoring of students.  Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; or provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

Minimum Qualifications

The candidate must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. in Philosophy or relevant related field by time of appointment. Equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable. The candidate must demonstrate an exceptionally promising research program in Asian Philosophy that contributes both to Philosophy and to the Asian and Asian American Studies Institute, and also must be able to conduct research in at least one language of primary sources. The candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills. The candidate must be qualified to teach and participate in our strong philosophy Ph.D. program, and must demonstrate a readiness for interdisciplinary collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications

We would like but do not require that the candidate demonstrate one or more of the following qualifications: ability to conduct research in an additional language of primary sources, ability to draw upon secondary literature in at least one modern Asian language, research in more than one sub-field of Asian Philosophy, ability to teach some of the history of Western philosophy, and ability to contribute to some current departmental strength.

Appointment Terms

This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2016. The successful candidate's primary academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus with the possibility of work at UConn’s regional campuses. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

At the University of Connecticut, our commitment to excellence is complemented by our commitment to building a culturally diverse community. We actively encourage women, people with disabilities, and members of minority groups to apply.  The University of Connecticut is an Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.
