Job description

Chapman University seeks applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Philosophy, Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, beginning August 2016.

Candidates will have a Ph.D. in philosophy and will show evidence of excellent teaching and an active research agenda. The area of specialization for the appointment is philosophy of physics. The ideal candidate should have knowledge of theoretical physics and a research agenda that includes investigating philosophical foundations of physics and implications of physics for traditional philosophical problems (e.g., free will, causation, time, consciousness, etc). The area of competence is open.

The candidate will develop and maintain an active line of research in philosophy and will build bridges to Chapman’s world class physics program and Institute for Quantum Studies led by Yakir Aharonov, a world-leader in foundations of physics and quantum theory. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate courses in philosophy of science and other upper and lower division courses depending on teaching interests and competence. The teaching load is 3-2 on a semester system.

Tenure track faculty are expected to develop and maintain an active research agenda for future tenure consideration and are evaluated on their research/scholarly activity, teaching and service.
