Job description

Director, Institute for Humanities Research (JOB# 11346)

Arizona State University

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for Director of the Institute for Humanities Research (IHR), with a concurrent appointment as tenured Professor in an academic unit within the college. Appointment will be located on the Tempe campus with an anticipated start of July 1, 2016. Salary is competitive.

Established in 2004, the IHR promotes excellence in humanities scholarship and advances collaboration with other research areas on campus, including social sciences, life sciences, natural sciences, engineering, education, sustainability, arts and design, and health sciences.  Over the past decade, the IHR has made substantial investments in collaborative research projects, enabling ASU scholars to develop their research and connect with humanists and other scholars across the University.

IHR provides critical support for individual scholars, teams of faculty, and important events aimed at propelling research on social, cultural, and technological issues, including recently funded major initiatives in the Digital Humanities, Environmental Humanities, and Medical Humanities. With a commitment to externally funded research, ASU now ranks among the Top 20 on the NSF’s HERD rankings for externally funded humanities research. Reporting to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences through the Dean of Humanities, the Director will provide administrative leadership in developing and implementing a creative vision that will help set a campus-wide agenda for innovative humanities research. Responsibilities include representing the IHR inside and outside the university, fiscal planning and management of the IHR, development and donor relations, and promotion of scholarship, research, and external funding.

ASU has developed a new model for the American Research University, creating an institution that is committed to excellence, access and impact. ASU measures itself by those it includes, not by those it excludes. ASU pursues research that contributes to the public good, and ASU assumes major responsibility for the economic, social and cultural vitality of the communities that surround it. As a director, the successful candidate will be expected to link the mission of the IHR to ASU’s unique Design Aspirations and Charter https://president.asu.edu/about/asucharter.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Qualifications commensurate with appointment as Professor with Tenure in an academic unit in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at ASU, which includes a record of excellent scholarship
  • A PhD in a humanities discipline
  • A demonstrated record of excellent externally-funded research
  • A record of interdisciplinary research or experience leading interdisciplinary programs

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with digital humanities
  • Experience with fundraising and donor relations
  • Experience cultivating partnerships with agencies, foundations, and/or institutions at the state and national levels related to the humanities, including state archives and major museums
  • Demonstrated competence in promoting professional development activities, including grant proposals
  • Experience with diversity in research, teaching, service, and/or community outreach

References may be contacted at a later stage of the search and only with the candidate’s approval.  Review of applications will begin on Nov. 25, 2015, if not filled, each week thereafter until the search is closed.  A background check is required for employment.
