Job description

Job description:  The Philosophy Board of Study at Purchase College, SUNY, seek to appoint a tenure-track Assistant Professor, to begin September, 2016.   Candidates must expect a PhD in Philosophy in hand by Sept. 1, 2016.

The Philosophy Board of Study emphasizes primary texts in the history of philosophy.  We are also strongly committed to 20th Century Continental thought, to philosophy and the arts, and to moral/social/political philosophy (including courses on gender and race).  We seek to engage students outside philosophy in many of our courses and to serve the College as a whole.  We seek a colleague committed to excellent undergraduate teaching, to her or his own intellectual work and development, and to participation in Purchase's thriving philosophical and intellectual community.

Teaching responsibilities include five courses a year plus supervision of six senior projects.  A senior project is a college-wide requirement and signature feature of the Purchase curriculum.  At least one of the five courses will serve the needs of Purchase's General Education Program.

The successful candidate will have an original research program.  We welcome interdisciplinary, innovative, and otherwise unusual research programs.  AOS is less important to us than deep engagement in and excitement about one's own philosophical/intellectual work.

First and foremost, we seek a colleague able and eager to design and teach courses in Ancient Greek Philosophy at the undergraduate level.  Candidates should have an interest in teaching courses of particular relevance to Psychology students and the ability to supervise philosophically-oriented Psychology senior projects. In addition, the successful candidate will be enthusiastic about contributing courses in two or more of the following areas:  philosophy of science (which may include philosophy of social sciences), critical race theory, gender/feminist theory, non-Western philosophy, early modern philosophy, social and political theory.  Evidence of teaching ability is required.

Purchase College is an undergraduate institution located 25 miles north of New York City. Because it houses a unique combination of Liberal Arts and Sciences majors and Arts Conservatory programs, our faculty and staff are committed to inspiring an appreciation for both intellectual and artistic talent in all students, with an emphasis on writing of all kinds.  Purchase College is ranked in the Top 10 public liberal arts colleges in the nation:  http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-liberal-arts-colleges/top-public
