Philosophy Instructor - Full Time Tenure Track - Fall 2016 (Two Positions)

Job Description:
The College of Southern Nevada is currently seeking two (2) full-time tenure track philosophy instructors beginning 2016 fall semester. AOS and AOC: Open. The primary teaching assignment involves teaching our core courses: Introduction to Philosophy and Critical Thinking. Sections of other philosophy courses may be available depending on departmental need. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a minimum of 15 credit hours per semester (i.e., a 5/5 teaching load in Fall and Spring) and to keep five office hours per week. In addition, the candidate will be expected to participate in department and division meetings, college committees, and other participatory governance activities. The candidate is also expected to assume leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole and leverage student support resources. The successful candidate will also be expected to engage in ongoing professional development.

The teaching assignment may be multi-campus, and may be day, evening, weekend, or online (though the current primary need is for on-ground day time classes).

The ideal candidate for this position embraces the overall mission of the College of Southern Nevada, and is committed to excellence in teaching directed towards student learning and success through the study of Philosophy, and is committed to ongoing research in philosophy.

In addition to a cover letter, resume, and transcripts, (as described below) applicants must also submit a statement of the candidate's teaching philosophy, a sample syllabus for (a) Introduction to Philosophy AND (b) Critical Thinking, as well as a minimum of three (3) letters of recommendation.

Required Qualifications:
• An earned (in hand) Master's degree in Philosophy from a regionally accredited college or university.
• Experience teaching college level philosophy courses as the instructor of record.

Preferred Qualifications:
• An earned (in hand) Ph.D. in Philosophy from a regionally accredited college or university at the time of appointment.
• At least one (1) year of successful experience teaching college level Critical Thinking and Introduction to Philosophy courses within the last two years.
• Demonstrated evidence of current preparation in the discipline of philosophy (within the last three years) and desire to maintain a current knowledge of the subject of philosophy, including ongoing research with the goal to present papers and to publish.
• Demonstrated evidence of appreciation and understanding of the role of a community college and the ability to design curriculum and learning activities that address a diversity of learning styles and levels.
• Demonstrated interest and willingness to participate in divisional and cross-college committees and activities.
• Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated philosophical research interests that meets the needs of a college academic department.

Salary:
• Initial salary placement is based on educational level and total years of full-time equivalent college teaching experience. A maximum of 10 years of experience will be considered for initial salary placement.
