Job description

The holder of this post will be an outstanding researcher in mathematical philosophy. They will apply formal, logical and mathematical methods to make progress on traditional philosophical issues, and investigate the scope and limits of this methodology.

They will work to strengthen existing internal and external collaborations in mathematical philosophy between members of Leeds’ Centre for Metaphysics and Mind and the cross disciplinary cluster of researchers in logic at Leeds. They will enhance the position of the University of Leeds as a major centre for logic and philosophy.

The fellow will be expected to work across disciplines to bring together philosophers with researchers in disciplines such as mathematical logic and computer science; to identify and conduct research on topics and problems that demand an interdisciplinary approach; and to work with established researchers in inside and outside Leeds to secure resources for these projects from a diverse array of funders. They will explore the potential for impact and partnerships with industry that such collaborations begin. They build upon an environment that is attractive to early career researchers, working to recruit, fund and support research postgraduates and post-doctoral fellows in cognate areas. They will assist the philosophy department in developing its undergraduate and taught postgraduate provision and recruitment in cognate areas.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated research excellence and teaching ability in the broadly-defined field of mathematical philosophy, which includes mathematical and philosophical logic, philosophy of mathematics, formal epistemology and theory of action, and similar. They will be able to demonstrate an ability to work across disciplinary boundaries with partners in mathematical logic/computer science. Awareness of the funding landscape and aptitude for securing external resource to fund research will be central to the role.

Career Pathway: Successful completion of a 5 year probationary period leading to appointment to grade 9 Associate Professor.
