Job description |
The Tilburg Center for Logic, Ethics and Philosophy of Science (TiLPS) at Tilburg University, The Netherlands, invites applications for a three-year postdoc position (1,0 fte) in philosophy of science, starting 1 September 2016. Candidates must hold a PhD degree by the time of appointment and be able to demonstrate their research excellence in philosophy of science. Candidates with PhD degrees outside philosophy (e.g., statistics or psychology) are welcome if they can demonstrate their aptness for the project and their philosophical expertise. The postdoctoral position is funded by the European Research Council (ERC), through a Starting Investigator Grant for Jan Sprenger's research project “Making Scientific Inferences More Objective”. For a précis of the research project, see www.laeuferpaar.de/SynopsisERCProject.pdf. The project searches for ways to make statistical, explanatory and causal inferences more objective. The successful candidate will combine these general philosophical problems with the statistical analysis of clinical trials. This covers (inter alia) questions of experimental design, measuring and aggregating evidence, and publication bias. A sound understanding of statistics and knowledge of the epistemology of medicine is therefore desirable. The successful candidate will be a member of the Department of Philosophy and of TiLPS, an internationally renowned center for innovative and scientifically minded philosophical research. TiLPS sustains a large international network and regularly organizes conferences, workshops and seminars in philosophy of science and other areas of philosophy. The position does not come with teaching obligations; however, the candidate will be able to teach to a limited extent if he/she desires to do so. Candidates should submit the following documents in a single pdf file: a cover letter, their CV, a writing sample, a research plan related to the project (max. 1200 words), and two letters of recommendation. If the letters are confidential, they should be sent via email to [email protected]. |
