Job description

Eastern Connecticut State University, the state’s public liberal arts university serving approximately 5300 students, offers a wide range of undergraduate majors in the arts and sciences and professional studies, as well as selected graduate programs. Located in historic Windham County in the heart of eastern Connecticut, the University is midway between New York City and Boston and only a short drive from Hartford, the state capital. We invite applications from candidates who have a strong commitment to teaching excellence, creative activity and scholarship, student advisement, university and community service. ECSU is especially interested in faculty with demonstrated innovation and excellence in teaching in a liberal arts curriculum, and sensitivity to diverse populations and perspectives.

Department: Political Science, Philosophy and Geography

Position: Assistant Professor – Comparative Philosophy, Tenure Track

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Philosophy or Comparative Philosophy. Areas of specialty include teaching and scholarship, i.e., publications and presentations in comparative philosophy - (western and non-western). This involves a comparison of subjects pertaining to the two areas of study as well as subjects within particular traditions. Teaching experience in Ancient Greek Philosophy is the other qualification. Special consideration will be given to a candidate who can read Classical Greek. Areas of competence include teaching Critical Thinking and Complex Reasoning as a course, and the underlying foundation of every course in the philosophy curriculum, ethics, continental philosophy and the basic courses in the liberal arts curriculum.

Position Description: We are seeking a candidate who is experienced in and dedicated to teaching the philosophies of the world and comparing the world views, epistemology and ethics of the different philosophical traditions. We want someone who can teach ancient Greek philosophy, and preferably can read classical Greek so as to interpret the writings of assigned texts in the subject. We expect and will seek evidence that the successful candidate can meet requirements as stated, and both engage and recruit students to the new Philosophy major. In addition to teaching and scholarship, we expect service to the department and the university.
