Salary range: £45,066 - £60,513 p.a. (plus substantive benefits)

Start date: 1 October 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter

Balliol College, Oxford, and the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Oxford, propose, if a suitable candidate applies, to appoint to an Official (Tutorial) Fellowship in Philosophy, in association with an Associate Professorship (or Professorship) in Philosophy of Physics, with effect from 1 October 2016. This is intended to be a permanent position. Applications are invited from candidates with a research specialisation in Philosophy of Physics.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide eight contact hours of undergraduate teaching per week averaged over the three eight-week terms which constitute the academic teaching year for Balliol College. She/He will give no fewer than 16 lectures or classes a year and deliver graduate teaching for the Faculty of Philosophy. She/He will also engage in advanced research and the administrative work of the College and Faculty. Pay will be on the scale £45,066 - £60,513 p.a., and additional allowances (including a taxable and pensionable College housing allowance, currently £5,465 p.a.) are available. Candidates should normally have received the degree of PhD: candidates who do not meet this requirement may be considered if they have attained a comparable level of publication.

The successful candidate will have a record of original, important, and rigorous published research in Philosophy of Physics, or evidence of potential to publish research of this quality. She/He must also have evidence of excellence, or of the potential for excellence, in undergraduate and graduate teaching and the ability to undertake pastoral responsibilities for both groups of students.

Applications, containing a completed application cover sheet (including the names and addresses of three referees), a detailed letter of application which sets out information about your research and the subjects you could offer to teach, a full curriculum vitae including a list of publications, and two samples of written work, should be sent by email to the Academic Administrator at Balliol College, Ms Glynis Price (email [email protected]; tel. (+44) 0 1865 277758), to arrive by noon GMT on Monday 4 January 2016. Candidates should ask their referees to email references directly to the Academic Administrator by this deadline without further prompting. Further particulars and an application cover sheet are located on the College website at: https://www.balliol.ox.ac.uk/people/vacancies/academic-vacancies. It is anticipated that interviews will be held on 4 and 5 February 2016 (short-listed candidates will need to be present on two days).

Balliol College, in association with the Faculty of Philosophy, hopes to be able to advertise a second post at Associate Professor level in the near future. The area of specialisation for this post is yet to be determined.

Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.
