Job description

Ad for Director of the Humanities Center at the University of Rochester

The University of Rochester seeks a director for its new Humanities Center. Building upon a long tradition of strength in humanistic inquiry, the Humanities Center has been established to support and lend vision to the study of the humanities and arts at the University of Rochester. It represents a call to action for the community of researchers in the humanities and offers opportunities to explore innovative possibilities for scholarly exchange and collaboration in an interdisciplinary setting, offering programs for faculty, graduate and undergraduate students and the public. The faculty member selected for this position will be the first to hold the named and endowed position as the Ani and Mark Gabrellian Humanities Center Director.

The Humanities Center is guided by the director, who will report to the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, in consultation with an executive committee of eight faculty members representing each of the academic departments that are the core of the Center. The director will hold a senior tenured faculty appointment in one of these departments and have a distinguished record of scholarly publication. Selection of the director will be overseen by the dean and a faculty search committee, which is largely independent of the executive committee. Other leaders, members of the Board of Trustees, and friends of the University will also be consulted about this 5 year, renewable appointment.

Responsibilities focus on overseeing the day-to-day work of the Center and collaborating with the executive committee and faculty at large on programs and strategies to fulfill the mission of the Center as it evolves along with the University. In this capacity, the director will lead strategic planning that is critical for the Center’s success, including expansion of programs and managing budgetary needs, and will promote the Center in conversation with interested parties, donors, and other University associates. Ongoing activities, carried out in cooperation with administrative and student support staff, also include overseeing the selection of speakers, noted invitees and all programs associated with the Center (such as the Humanities Project, Digital Humanities events, The Distinguished Visiting Humanist Program, The Ferrari Symposia, and participation in Central New York Humanities Corridor projects), as well as overseeing the application process and selection of external and internal fellows each year.

The director will expand the role of our undergraduate community in the humanities and will serve as a strong advocate to the deans, on behalf of faculty and the executive committee, on matters related to the Center and to the humanities on campus more broadly.
