Job description

The Department of Philosophy at Southern Illinois University Carbondale invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of African American/Africana Philosophy. Position is contingent on available funding.

The Philosophy Department at SIU Carbondale is known worldwide for its history of leadership and research in the field of classical American Philosophy. It houses the Center for Dewey Studies, the Library of Living Philosophers, the Phenomenology Research Center, and hosts several journals and book series. The Philosophy Department grants both MA and Ph.D. degrees and has an exceptionally strong placement record for its graduates. The Department is committed to a robust pluralism in philosophical methodologies.

Start Date: August 16, 2016, 9-month appointment.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in Philosophy or in a closely related field. Broad expertise in African American and Africana Philosophy is required. Preferred qualifications include records of successful teaching and publication as well as a background in one or more of the following: Critical Race Theory, Feminist/Womanist Philosophy, the African and Caribbean Roots of African American Philosophy, Continental Philosophy, Classical American Philosophy. PhD candidates will be considered if all degree requirements will be completed by August 15, 2016. If all requirements for the Ph.D. are not completed by August 15, 2016, a term, non-tenure track appointment may be offered in accordance with University policy (http://policies.siu.edu/personnel_policies/chapter2/ch2-faps/conting.html).

Duties: Maintaining an active program of scholarship that involves regular publication, as well as teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, advising graduate student projects and continuing service to the department and college as appropriate to academic rank. The typical teaching load for untenured faculty in the department is two courses per semester.
