Job description

Assistant Professor in Practical Philosophy (1.0 FTE)

Job description

The Department for Philosophy and Religious Studies at Utrecht University is looking for an Assistant Professor in the field of Practical Philosophy, with a focus on Philosophical Ethics. This position includes both teaching (70%) and research in this field (30%). The position is part of the Ethics Institute within the department. Together with the group for "Theoretical Philosophy" and the "History of Philosophy", this group is responsible for the department’s research and teaching in philosophy.

The Ethics Institute does research in (fundamental and applied) ethics, political philosophy and philosophical anthropology. Many of the Institute’s research projects in applied ethics have a strong interdisciplinary nature (e.g. economic ethics, environmental ethics, bioethics). Members of the Ethics Institute participate in the Utrecht Universities’ strategic theme "Institutions for Open Societies". The Ethics Institute is responsible for the practical philosophy components of the curriculum in philosophy and offers courses in ethics for students in a variety of degree programmes throughout Utrecht University.

We are looking for a colleague who can contribute significantly to research and teaching in the field. With regard to research, we expect the colleague to have a solid background in philosophical ethics (including the history of the field) and research specialisation within the expertise of the Ethics Institute, preferably the research interests should include both theoretical research in practical philosophy and interdisciplinary applied ethics.

With regard to teaching, we expect proven teaching skills and the ability to teach courses across a wide range of areas in practical philosophy. The assistant professor will teach at both the BA- and MA-level, contribute to interdisciplinary teaching activities, supervise theses, and be available for teaching-related administrative tasks, such as committee work or curriculum development.

The candidate is also expected to be available for other administrative tasks in the department and/or faculty, resulting, when appropriate, in proportional reductions in teaching duties.

Qualifications

You:

  • have finished your PhD;
  • have a strong international track record in research in the field of philosophical ethics, as demonstrated by publications in international journals and/or with the important publishers in the field;
  • have proven your ability to perform innovative research at a high level, and are willing and able to compete for national and international research grants;
  • are an inspiring and experienced teacher who can develop and teach courses on both BA- and MA-level, as documented by a strong track record in teaching and a certificate in academic teaching;
  • have the ability to play an appropriate role in departmental management and to contribute fully to the academic life of the department;
  • are able and willing to teach in Dutch and in English. (We expect foreign candidates to master the Dutch language within two years).

Offer

We offer a position, starting September 1st 2016. The initial appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of one year. Subject to satisfactory performance, this will be followed by a permanent appointment. Salary depends on qualifications and experience and will by full qualification range from € 3,400 to € 4,654 for a full time position, consistent with the CAO (Collective Employment Agreement) scale 11 for Dutch Universities. Depending on the prior experience of the candidate and the performance in the job, the university and the candidate can agree on a promotion-track to an associate professorship.

Under the current CAO Utrecht University offers a pension scheme, a holiday allowance of 8% per year, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and flexible terms of employment. Conditions are set by the Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities. More information: working at Utrecht University.
