Job description

The School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science at the University of Leeds is pleased to invite applications for a two-year fixed-term Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship. This post arises from the Leverhulme Research Project “Thinking Counterfactually: How What Would Have Been reveals What Is and What Must Be”. This project is led by Professor John Divers.

The project is concerned with the function and objectivity of counterfactual thought and the relations of these to the function and objectivity of alethic modal thought. The project has the following stated objectives:

  • To construct a comprehensive use-profile for counterfactual judgments;
  • To deploy the use-profile for counterfactual judgments to argue against skepticism about counterfactuals;
  • To deploy the use-profile for counterfactual judgments, and its capacity to dislodge skepticism, in order to shape and constrain a comprehensive an antirealist philosophical theory of counterfactuals;
  • To argue for the transmission of the antirealist status of counterfactuals through appropriate connection theses to related modalities of necessity, impossibility and contingency.

You will have a PhD, or will have submitted a PhD thesis for examination, by the agreed starting date of the post: the PhD thesis will be in Philosophy, or an allied discipline, and you will have a background in areas of Philosophy related to Counterfactual Thinking. You will be expected to pursue independent work related to the themes and objectives of the Thinking Counterfactually Project, and to work as a research assistant to the Principal Investigator (PI). Working as part of a team, you will be expected to be involved in planning and running collaborative activities of the project group (project meetings and seminars) as well as some administrative work associated with the project.

You will be based at the University of Leeds and will be expected to take an active role in the overall research life and culture of the department.

We welcome applications from everyone irrespective of gender and ethnic group but, as women and members of ethnic minority groups are currently under-represented at this level of post, we would encourage applications from members of these groups.  Appointment will be based on merit alone.

Informal discussions with longlisted candidates will be held via Skype on 25/26 August 2016 (longlisted candidates will be notified by Monday 22nd August).

Interviews will be held on 7 September 2016
