Seizing this pivotal moment in Georgetown’s history, the Department of African American Studies invites applications for at least four open-rank positions (one potential philosopher position), which have an anticipated start date of August 1, 2017. This first set of hires inaugurates a multi-year hiring initiative and is an integral part of Georgetown University’s plan to expand African American Studies, and establish a Research Center for Racial Justice. We seek scholars who have an ambitious research agenda, a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, and an earnest desire to help build the newly formed department and participate in other university service. Currently, our strengths lie in African American studies and its intersections with literary studies, sociology, history, and performance studies. Building upon these fields, we seek cross-disciplinary, multi-disciplinary, and trans-disciplinary scholarship that strengthens African American Studies’ capacity in psychology, visual studies, philosophy, political science, economics, women’s and gender studies, anthropology, and law and criminology. More specifically, we seek applicants whose research interests engage with one of the following topics: Structural and cultural causes of and solutions to black inequality Black cultural productions and responses to legacies and impacts of slavery, Jim Crow segregation, and imperialism in US institutions How Black intersectionality informs equality and social justice |

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in African American Studies or related fields by July 1, 2017. Senior candidates with administrative and departmental leadership interests and experience are especially welcomed. All applicants should specify the rank for which they are applying in the letter of interest.
Applicants without tenure should submit a letter of interest, C.V., writing sample (10,000 words or less), three letters of recommendation, and dissertation abstract (if the candidate is ABD).
