Job description

Assistant Professor of Philosophy

Department of Philosophy and World Religions

The Department of Philosophy and World Religions is seeking an Assistant Professor of Philosophy, tenure-track, beginning August 2017. AOS in one or more of the following: modern philosophy (Kant through Marx) OR social/political philosophy OR philosophy of law; AOC in the others. Teaching load is 3/3, with one course per semester in the AOS/AOC or a junior-senior seminar (which helps students prepare for employment by integrating their work in the major with experiences outside the classroom), and two courses in our Liberal Arts Core: introduction to philosophy and one in the sequence of three Humanities courses. Additional responsibilities include pre-law advising for the College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences. The successful candidate will share the Department’s commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching, to research that informs their teaching, and to engaged service (mentoring students, serving on committees, and offering programming on campus and in the wider community). UNI’s new strategic plan prioritizes engaged, integrative and applied learning experiences in and outside the classroom. A demonstrated affinity for these types of learning experiences, including civic engagement, is preferred. Ph.D. in philosophy by time of application is required. A compelling record of effective teaching, an active research program, and a commitment to and understanding of the value of studying philosophy in a student-centered, public university with a strong liberal-arts tradition are also required. Supporting materials should include a detailed letter of application, CV, graduate transcripts, statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi and assignments, course evaluations, scholarship sample (30-page limit), research program statement, and 3 letters of recommendation. Applications received by October 17, 2016 will be given full consideration. To apply, visit http://jobs.uni.edu. For more information, contact Reza Lahroodi, at [email protected] or by phone at (319) 273-6440. UNI actively seeks to enhance diversity and is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.  The University encourages applications from persons of color, women, individuals living with disabilities, and protected veterans.  All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, color, creed, disability, gender identity, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, protected veteran status, or any other basis protected by federal and/or state law.  Pre-employment background checks are required.  UNI is a tobacco-free campus.
