Job description

The Department of Philosophy at Penn State University [http://philosophy.la.psu.edu] invites applications for a tenure track position, at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, beginning Fall 2017. The Department seeks scholars whose teaching and research center on the Ethics of Borders. Specifically, the scholar will engage in work that illuminates the many inter-related philosophical, ethical, political, and legal questions arising from the increased movement of people within and across national boundaries – including refugees fleeing persecution; other forced migrants such as those fleeing violence, poverty, and the effects of climate change; and migrant workers seeking economic stability. Area of Specialization: Ethics and/or Political Philosophy, with emphasis on the ethics of immigration, migration, citizenship, or related areas. The ideal candidate will complement the department’s existing strengths in social and political philosophy, feminist philosophy, critical philosophy of race, and Continental philosophy. Preference will be given to candidates whose work is informed by an engagement with the history of philosophy and who have a demonstrated ability to promote dialogue across philosophical traditions. Minimum qualifications:  PhD in philosophy or related fields.
Penn State (www.psu.edu) is embarking on a transformative series of co-funded hires in ethics designed to ensure that Penn State becomes a leader in ethics informed interdisciplinary research and the integration of ethical literacy throughout the Penn State curriculum.  This is one of twelve tenure-track appointments funded by the University to augment the Penn State mission in this important area.  Co-funded faculty will be hosted as affiliate faculty in the Penn State Rock Ethics Institute (rockethics.psu.edu).  We are seeking candidates who will build on the Rock Ethics Institute’s tradition of excellence in collaborative, interdisciplinary ethics research and ethically informed decision support for significant societal issues, as well as their success in integrating ethics into the curriculum.  We are looking for individuals who will be effective in working on and leading interdisciplinary teams that embed ethical analysis into research projects including decision support research, and who have experience and interest in integrating ethics in undergraduate and graduate curricula.  Faculty who are hired will receive a one-course release for the first five years designed to enhance collaboration with faculty and students on existing ethics research and curricular initiatives, as well as building new initiatives and programs in conjunction with the Institute’s mission.
