Job description

Wesleyan University’s College of Letters invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Letters beginning July 1, 2017.  The College of Letters is an interdisciplinary major in predominantly European literature, history, and philosophy.  Team teaching of material from all three disciplines over the period from antiquity to the present is required.  Broad literary and historical interests are thus essential.  Expertise in a foreign language of European origin is required.  The teaching load is 2/2. Additional duties include advising and mentoring students, carrying on a program of research, and participating in faculty governance at the departmental and university level.  Wesleyan is a highly selective liberal arts college that values both scholarship and teaching very highly, has a strong, diverse undergraduate student body, and offers a generous sabbatical program and competitive salaries and benefits.

We seek a scholar specializing in aesthetics in the continental tradition of philosophy and who can also teach the history of philosophy from the 17th-19th centuries.  The candidate should show interest in bridging the conceptual and the concrete through familiarity with actual objects of aesthetic experience.  Candidates must be committed to contributing to the design and teaching of an interdisciplinary curriculum in the humanities.  A Ph.D. in Philosophy or relevant field that is complete or very near completion is expected by the time of appointment.

Applications received by November 18, 2016 are assured full consideration.  Wesleyan University, located in Middletown, Connecticut, does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religious creed, age, gender, gender identity or expression, national origin, marital status, ancestry, present or past history of mental disorder, learning disability or physical disability, political belief, veteran status, sexual orientation, genetic information or non-position-related criminal record.  We welcome applications from women and historically underrepresented minority groups. Inquiries regarding Title IX, Section 504, or any other non-discrimination policies should be directed to: Antonio Farias, VP for Equity & Inclusion, Title IX and ADA/504 Officer, 860-685-4771, [email protected].
