Full or Associate Professor of Comparative Philosophy

The Faculty of Humanities, Institute for Philosophy, invites applications for a:

Full or Associate Professor of Comparative Philosophy (1.0 fte)

Key responsibilities

As Professor of Comparative Philosophy will be making an important contribution to the Institute’s academic environment and to the development of global and comparative perspective in our teaching and research programmes.
You will:
• Maintain a productive line of research in comparative philosophy, preferably with an emphasis on Asian, preferably Chinese, philosophy;
• Take advantage of external research funding opportunities;
• Contribute to the development and teaching of philosophy courses from a global and comparative perspective;
• Contribute to the management of the Institute for Philosophy and the Faculty of Humanities.

Selection Criteria

• A PhD degree in comparative philosophy;
• Excellent research qualities, high-quality research and publication record in the field of comparative philosophy, with a specialization in Asian philosophy, preferably Chinese philosophy, including proficiency in the relevant language(s);
• Proven ability to acquire research funding and experience in managing research projects;
• Extensive international network in the field of comparative philosophy and beyond;
• Ample experience and proven excellence in teaching in various forms of university education, as well as thesis supervision;
• Experience in course and curriculum development;
• Demonstrated management and leadership abilities;
• Readiness to perform administrative and management duties in the Institute for Philosophy and the Faculty of Humanities, as well as in research programmes and networks;
• Team player’s mentality;
• If the successful applicant is not Dutch-speaking, she or he is expected to acquire a good command of Dutch within two years from taking up duty, for administrative and social purposes; the University will fund her/his Dutch training at the University’s Academic Language Center;
• After appointment, depending on experience and formal qualifications to date, the successful applicant will be required to enter a nationally standardized tertiary teaching skills certification trajectory (BKO or Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs), successful completion of which is a condition for favorable assessment in work reviews.

The Faculty of Humanities is rich in expertise in fields as philosophy, religious studies, history, art history, literature, linguistics and regional studies covering nearly every region of the world. Our faculty is home to more than 6400 students and 800 staff members. The Institute for Area Studies (LIAS), one of the six Research Institutes within the Faculty of Humanities, has a strong Asian Studies Department. Research in the Institute for Philosophy covers a wide range of traditional philosophical subdisciplines, focusing in particular on Political Philosophy and Philosophy of Cognition. Our research emphasizes interactions between systematic and historical approaches to philosophy, and thrives on intensive national and international collaboration (including Beijing Normal University). In research as well as in teaching, the Institute is eager to promote a comparative and global perspective that includes traditions that have originated outside Europe. Members of the institute contribute to teaching in the bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes in Philosophy, and to philosophy courses in other programmes. Terms and conditions

We offer a full-time position, starting February 1, 2017. If the successful candidate has already held a full professorship or has successfully completed a tenure track, she/he is eligible for a permanent appointment as Full Professor. In other cases the Full professorship will initially be for a period of five years, convertible into a permanent position in case of satisfactory performance. In case of appointment as Associate Professor a tenure track will be the case.

The gross monthly salary will be between € 5,219.- and € 7,599.- commensurate with qualifications and experience. These amounts are based on a fulltime appointment and are in conformity with current salary scales under the collective employment agreement (cao) for Dutch Universities.

An appointment at Leiden University includes pension build-up and other benefits, including an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%.
