Job description

The University of Tampa (UT) seeks a Dean for its College of Arts and Letters (CAL). A medium-sized, comprehensive, residentially-based institution of 8,300 undergraduate and graduate students, the University is ideally situated on a beautiful 110-acre campus next to the Hillsborough River, adjacent to Tampa’s dynamic central business district, which is a growing, vibrant, diverse metropolitan area. UT reflects this vibrancy; it boasts 227 student organizations, a multicultural student body from 50 states and 140 countries, and “Top Tier” ranking in U.S. News and World Report. Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean will be responsible for leading and managing seven departments: Art; Communication; English and Writing; Languages and Linguistics; Music; Philosophy and Religion; and Speech, Theatre, and Dance.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Candidates should demonstrate: a commitment to academic excellence, including high-quality teaching, scholarship, and creative activity; prior academic leadership experience; the ability to think strategically, listen carefully, prioritize effectively, and act decisively; an understanding of and appreciation for the arts and the humanities, both contemporary and traditional; a track record of success in building academic programs and support services; prudent management of budget resources; an ability to work collaboratively and collegially with diverse constituencies; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; and integrity. Our preferred candidate will be a collaborative leader able to advocate for the College and cultivate its role as a force for progress and success both at the University and in the local and global communities.

Under the leadership of President Ron Vaughn the University has experienced a period of substantial improvement, enrollment growth, and program development. In the past 15 years the number of full-time faculty has doubled, academic support and services have expanded, faculty development has flourished, and over $530 million in construction has been completed or is underway. UT is currently conducting a campaign, Creating Tomorrow, which has raised over $140 million toward its goal. The campaign priorities are the endowment, capital projects, annual fund, and planned giving. The University benefits from the support of over 800 individuals involved in various advisory groups, including an excellent Board of Trustees, many community leaders, and approximately 1,500 employees. Over 90 percent of all students are full-time, with representatives from all 50 states and 140 countries.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates should possess an earned terminal degree and credentials to merit tenure as a full professor in an academic discipline offered in the College. They should also have experience with academic leadership and management to build on the College’s strengths and take it to even higher levels of academic excellence and student success.

TO APPLY: Inquiries, nominations, and applications are invited. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled. Candidates should provide a curriculum vitae, a letter of application that addresses the responsibilities and requirements described in the Leadership Profile available at www.wittkieffer.com, and the names and contact information of five references. References will not be contacted without prior knowledge and approval of candidates. These materials should be sent electronically via e-mail to the University of Tampa’s consultants Robin Mamlet, Robert Luke, and Kim Brettschneider at email address, [email protected]. The consultants can be reached by telephone through the desk of Leslie Donahue at 630-575-6178.
