Rank: Assistant Professor

Type: Tenure-Track

The Philosophy Department at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania seeks applications for a tenure-track position in practical ethics. Dickinson College is a highly selective four-year, independent liberal arts college with 2,300 students.  It is located 20 minutes west of Harrisburg and is a two-hour drive from Baltimore, Washington DC, and Philadelphia. For the first three years of this position, the teaching load will be reduced to 3 courses per year from the usual 5 courses. This position is part of a new initiative at the College to promote civic learning and engagement. The reduced teaching load in the first three years is to allow the successful applicant to develop creative and effective ways to promote understanding of issues in practical ethical across the curriculum by working with faculty in other departments to introduce or expand attention to ethical issues in their own fields. We expect that the successful candidate will work with colleagues in Student Life to create interesting and innovative ways of introducing ethics into such areas as internships, community service, student leadership development, diversity work, and athletics. For example: creating a repository of ethics related materials, such as videos, podcasts, exercises, etc., appropriate for use in courses in various disciplines; coaching an ethics bowl team; advising and mentoring students in ethics-related internships. Since this initiative is new, the successful candidate will play a major role in defining it.

The ability to create inclusive learning environments for an increasingly diverse student body will be an important characteristic of the successful candidate. The College is committed to building a representative and diverse faculty, administrative staff, and student body. We encourage applications from all qualified persons.

Applicants should submit a letter of interest, a current CV, example syllabi, a writing sample, and three letters of reference. A letter of reference addressing the applicant’s teaching would also be helpful. Letters of interest should address how the applicant foresees developing creative and effective ways to promote understanding of issues in practical ethical across the College and beyond the academy. Applications must be submitted online at https://jobs.dickinson.edu/.

Review of applications will begin on December 1, 2016. In early January, we will conduct a first round of interviews by Skype.
