Job description. The philosophy department at Rice University in Houston, Texas, has been authorized to fill a position at the Assistant or Associate professor level in the history of modern philosophy, broadly construed. We are particularly interested in someone who specializes in early modern philosophy but can also offer courses in Kant and 19th century philosophy, or someone who specializes in Kant but can also offer courses in early modern philosophy. In addition, the department will be interested in candidates whose historical work can complement the department’s research strengths in ethics and value theory or philosophy of mind. Standard teaching load is two courses per semester, at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. The successful candidate must have a PhD degree in philosophy by November 1 of the year employment commences. She or he will have a strong record of research and evidence a commitment to innovative teaching and will be able to take advantage of, and contribute to, some of the many opportunities for collaboration both on campus and beyond, while taking an active role in charting the department’s future course.
