The Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for the position of

PROFESSOR/ASSOCIATE/ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

in practical philosophy, with a special focus on ethics and social philosophy.

The successful applicant may be appointed to a professorship or a fixed-term assistant professorship (tenure track system), depending on his or her qualifications and career stage.

The position is in the discipline of practical philosophy, which has a professorship (philosophy of the social sciences) and three university lectureships in addition to the current professorship/associate/assistant professorship. The teachers and researchers in ethics and social philosophy as well as the philosophy of the social sciences cooperate closely with each other. The discipline hosts the Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence in the Philosophy of the Social Sciences, which features a multinational research community of more than 30 scholars and is the world’s largest unit in its field. The discipline of practical philosophy also has approximately 40 other researchers and doctoral students, and annually awards some 10–15 Master’s degrees and two doctoral degrees.

The professor/associate/assistant professor is expected to hold a doctoral degree and be able to conduct top-level international research, provide teaching based on such research, and supervise theses and dissertations. He or she must also participate in doctoral education and the development of teaching, and acquire research funding. It is required of a professor/ assistant/associate to have experience in the supervision of scientific research and present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents as well as of his or her academic leadership skills. A professor/assistant/associate is expected to be capable of independent scientific work and have the ability and motivation to pursue a scientific career, as demonstrated through publications or otherwise.

The successful applicant will have extensive research and teaching qualifications in the field of practical philosophy, with a special focus on ethics, social philosophy and political philosophy. When assessing the applicants, scholarly work outside Finland, high-quality international publications, international collaboration networks and elected positions as well as success in the acquisition of external research funding will also be given consideration. Moreover, pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials and, especially in the case of the professorship, leadership and interaction skills will be considered.

According to the Government Decree on Universities, professors/associate/assistant professors must be proficient in Finnish. They must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good English skills. Foreign citizens or Finnish citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish are expected to be willing to acquire sufficient proficiency in Finnish. The employer will support the appointee’s language learning.

The salary for the position will be based on levels 8–10 (professor) and 7 (assistant/associate professor) of the requirement scheme for teaching and research positions in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The gross monthly salary will be approximately €4,500–8,000, depending on the appointee’s career stage and scholarly qualifications.

The following English-language documents must be enclosed with the application:

• A curriculum vitae
• A list of publications (see www.helsinki.fi/socialsciences/administration/positions/open)
• An informal report (max. 5 pages) on the applicant’s scholarly activities (international research experience, success in obtaining research funding and activities in the scientific community)

• A brief report (1–2 pages) on how the applicant intends to develop his or her research and focus his or her scholarly activities, if appointed

Shortlisted candidates may be asked by the Faculty to submit 10 publications for assessment after the application period, and applicants are kindly asked to be prepared for this request. Applicants must save these publications in the University’s electronic recruitment system as attachments to their application and they should indicate these documents on their list of publications.

Applications must be submitted through the University’s electronic recruitment system by clicking on the link below. Internal applicants (i.e., current employees of the University of Helsinki) must submit their applications through the SAP HR portal.
