Job description

St. Mary’s University, San Antonio, Texas
Assistant Professor of Philosophy

St. Mary’s University is seeking to fill a tenure-track faculty position in philosophy at the Assistant Professor level, to begin Fall 2017. A Ph.D. in philosophy is required. In particular, we seek a colleague who can contribute to both our core curriculum courses and to the Applied Ethics needs across the university. AOS: Applied Ethics (cybersecurity ethics, engineering ethics, and/or environmental ethics); AOC: Feminism, Race Theory, and/or Rights Theory. Evidence of undergraduate teaching experience and promise of scholarly contribution to the discipline are also required. Duties will include four courses (12 credit hours) of undergraduate teaching each fall and spring semester. Summer teaching is available. Participation in advising and other non-teaching duties is expected.

The Department of Philosophy, with seven permanent faculty and a similar number of visiting and adjunct faculty members, provides courses in St. Mary’s Core Curriculum including Foundations of Reflection: Self, Foundations of Practice: Ethics, and Prospects for Community and Civilization. An undergraduate major and minor are offered, and in the Fall of 2016, there were about 40 philosophy majors and minors. The department also provides courses to other departments and programs.

As a department, we are a community grounded in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, and seek a colleague to join us in educating in a manner that is historical, foundational, integrative, and transformative, rooted in a concern for philosophical anthropology. Our foundational philosophy course and the perspective of the department are inspired by the work of Bernard Lonergan, and the successful candidate must be ready to engage this approach. The candidate does not need to be of the Catholic faith, but is expected to contribute to the University’s mission and be supportive of the Roman Catholic and Marianist educational tradition.

Founded in 1852 by the Society of Mary, St. Mary’s is a comprehensive Catholic and Marianist university with a strong tradition of integrating liberal arts with professional studies. St. Mary’s enrolls 4,000 students in a diverse university with five schools, more than 40 academic programs including Ph.D. and J.D. programs, and numerous pre-professional programs. St. Mary’s has been cited for high graduation rates among Texas colleges and is ranked among the best in the West Region for value and academic quality by U.S. News & World Report. St. Mary’s is the oldest Catholic university in the Southwest, and continues to advocate the Marianist mission of academic excellence and servant leadership.

Along with the employment application please upload: (1) a cover letter that responds to the department’s fundamental educational commitments, (2) a C.V., (3) teaching documentation, (4) three letters of recommendation, and (5) a writing sample. Applications must be received by December 8th, 2016. Questions may be addressed to Dr. James Greenaway, Chair of the Department of Philosophy, at [email protected].

Any offer of employment is contingent upon budget authorization and upon successful completion of a clear background check. We encourage applications from women and minority candidates. Salary is competitive.
