Job description

The School of Politics, Philosophy, and Public Affairs (PPPA) at Washington State University (WSU) in Pullman, WA is seeking to hire a permanent, full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor in bioethics to participate in its newly launched Functional Genomics Initiative (FGI).  The FGI is a multi-million dollar university-funded Initiative developed by the College of Veterinary Medicine in partnership with the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences.

WSU units participating in FGI include the Center for Reproductive Biology, the School of Molecular Biosciences, the Department of Animal Sciences, the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology, and PPPA. We aim to increase food production with economic benefit, enhance disease resistance and develop characteristics that allow livestock to thrive in the future as global demand for food increases. FGI faculty will be cross-disciplinary and will include both researchers who use gene-editing technologies and conduct fundamental and applied genomics research, and researchers who address societal issues in the application of genomics technology.

Required Qualifications: An earned PhD in bioethics with emphasis on ethical and societal issues in biotechnology by the date of hire, a publication record appropriate to career stage, evidence of on-going interest, evidence of and success in cross- and multi-disciplinary research, and evidence of teaching excellence. Preferred qualifications are expertise in other areas of applied ethics and a record of active grant application.

Job Responsibilities: Teaching bioethics and other subjects in applied ethics in PPPA, the normal course load is four courses per academic year; addressing social and ethical acceptability of crop and livestock biotechnology, associated animal welfare and other ethical issues in livestock production, and general ethical issues regarding all applications of gene editing, including to humans; development of an internationally recognized research program that includes active initiation of, and collaborative participation in funding proposals; contributing expertise in bioethics to the FGI concerning animals and societal impacts of genomics research in collaborations with FGI colleagues throughout the campus; contribution to broad bioethics/biotechnology curricula for undergraduate and graduate students in PPPA, Veterinary Medicine, and Agriculture as well as contribution to institutional service needs.

Salary/Benefits: Salary is competitive, commensurate with experience and qualifications, and accompanied by excellent fringe benefits. Please see http://hrs.wsu.edu/employees/benefits/
