Job description

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Bergen is inviting applications for a 3-year post doctor position. The preferred starting date is 1 September 2017, but a later date might be possible.

 About the position

The position is partly funded by Bergen Forskningsstiftelse (Bergen Research Foundation) and partly by the University of Bergen. It is connected to the project “Boolean Causal Modeling with Coincidence Analysis”.  Further information about the project can be found here: Causal Modeling Project

 The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the project by doing research on relevant themes, publish the results in peer reviewed journals, assisting the leader of the project in organizing workshops and conferences connected to the project, and to visit partner institutions abroad.

 It may be possible to add a fourth year to the fellowship. This extension will mainly be teaching duties at the university’s first term Examen philosophicum courses.

 The successful applicant will be expected to relocate to the University of Bergen and follow the regulations that apply to the position.

 Qualification requirements

  • Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree in theoretical Philosophy, preferably in the philosophy of science or epistemology, as well as have a pronounced interest in scientific research methods and interdisciplinary work. The doctoral thesis must have been submitted for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.

  • The successful applicant must have a solid track record in peer-review publishing.

  • The core responsibility of the successful candidate will consist in conducting the meta-methodological analysis of the relationship between Coincidence Analysis and methods from other theoretical traditions, as Bayes-nets methods and regression-analytical methods.

  • The successful candidate will be encouraged to integrate her/his ongoing research into the context of this project.

  • Applicants must master written and oral English on a high level. Good skills in the Norwegian language will be an advantage.
