Job description

The Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Philosophy invites you to apply for a 100 % permanent position as Associate Professor of Philosophy.

As Associate Professor of Philosophy you will be expected to conduct research in philosophy, to participate in teaching at all levels and to carry out administrative duties in accordance with the needs of the Department. The position is split between research, teaching and administrative duties. The normal load is currently at 50% teaching, 45% research and 5%administration.

The Department of Philosophy currently has five full-time appointments. The Department offers courses on all academic levels, including Examen philosophicum and Examen facultatum for BA in Law, BA in Psychology, BA in International studies with History, BA in Film- and Television studies and BA in Pedagogics.

Qualifications and personal skills

  • PhD or equivalent within the field of Philosophy
  • AOS in one or more of the following areas:
    • Practical philosophy (including ethics, political- and social philosophy, environmental philosophy and philosophy of law)
    • Philosophy of mind (including the philosophy of psychology)
    • Philosophy of science (Philosophy of social sciences, including feminist approaches, or the philosophy of biology)
  • AOC: open
  • International peer-reviewed publications
  • Documentet excellent teaching abilities at all academic levels, including Examen philosophicum and Examen facultatum
  • Candidates who are not able to document formal teaching qualifications must qualify by attending our Teaching and learning in higher education program, to be further agreed with LUC
  • Experience in establishing international research networks
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, in Norwegian (or Danish or Swedish) and English
  • Overall good affinity with relevant ICT systems

We are looking for a candidate who can work independently as well as in cooperation with others. We are interested in someone who has the capacity to initiate and implement both research and teaching. The successful candidate will be capable of doing research- and administrative leadership.

  • Research portfolio, including overview of peer reviewed papers, description of research projects and other relevant research and development work. The number of academic work to be assessed should not be more than 7. Works from the last 5 years will be given more weight and the quality of work valued more than the quantity
  • Teaching and learning portfolio, including examples of teaching and learning material, cyllabi, curricula and experience in use of various teaching methods, different forms of assessment and supervision
  • Copies of educational certificates and letters of recommendation (if any)
