Job description

The Department for Philosophy and Religious Studies at Utrecht University is looking for two Assistant Professors in the field of Practical Philosophy, with a focus on Philosophical Ethics. The positions include both teaching (70%) and research in this field (30%). The position is part of the Ethics Institute within the Department. Together with the group for "Theoretical Philosophy" and the "History of Philosophy", this group is responsible for the Department’s research and teaching in philosophy.

We are looking for two colleagues who can contribute significantly to research in the field of ethics, and who have teaching expertise and interest in both ethics and political philosophy. With regard to research, we expect these colleagues to have a solid background in philosophical ethics (including the history of the field) and a research specialization that fits the expertise of the Ethics Institute. We are particularly interested in applications from candidates who combine a specialization in normative ethics with expertise in climate ethics, bioethics or economic ethics. Also, we specifically want to invite candidates who combine analytic and hermeneutic approaches to normative ethics.

With regard to teaching, we expect proven teaching skills and the ability to teach courses across a wide range of areas in practical philosophy. The assistant professors will teach at both the BA- and MA-level, contribute to interdisciplinary teaching activities, supervise theses, and be available for teaching-related administrative tasks, such as committee work or curriculum development.

The candidate is also expected to be available for other administrative tasks in the Department and/or Faculty, resulting, when appropriate, in proportional reductions in teaching duties.
