Vacancy Overview

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Warwick invites applications for a full-time, three-year postdoctoral research fellowship in moral and political philosophy, starting on 1 October 2017.

The position is part of the research project “Investigating the Ethics and Politics of Sociability”, led by Prof. Kimberley Brownlee and funded by the Leverhulme Trust.

The research fellow will undertake research that contributes to the Project, specifically on social rights, duties, and freedoms. She or he will single-author at least three peer-reviewed articles on these themes to lay the foundations for a monograph, as well as prepare conference presentations and web content on that research. Possible article topics include:

1) a taxonomy and analysis of the philosophical respectability of the social rights enumerated in international human rights agreements;

2) an analysis of interpersonal social rights in relation to debates about distributive justice, luck egalitarianism, and social egalitarianism; and

3) an assessment of the social pre-conditions for political participation and their implications for democratic theory.

The research fellow will also co-organize an international conference and co-edit a journal special issue on social rights. Finally, she or he will co-author an encyclopaedia entry on social rights, social virtues, and freedom of association.

All applications must be accompanied by a CV, a covering letter and a writing sample (of no more than 8,000 words). Please note that references may be requested prior to shortlisting.
