Job description

The Department of Philosophy at Penn State University [http://philosophy.la.psu.edu] invites applications for a tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor, beginning Fall 2018. AOS: Ethics and Political Philosophy, with emphasis on the ethics of immigration, migration, citizenship, human rights, global justice, or related areas.  AOC: Open. This search is part of an initiative we are calling the Ethics of Borders: specifically, the scholar will engage in work that illuminates the many inter-related philosophical, ethical, political, and legal questions arising from the increased movement of people within and across national boundaries – such as refugees, including climate refugees, forced migrants, and migrant workers. The ideal candidate will complement the department’s existing strengths in social and political philosophy, feminist philosophy, critical philosophy of race, and Continental philosophy. Preference will be given to candidates whose work is informed by an engagement with the history of philosophy and who have a demonstrated ability to promote dialogue across philosophical traditions. PhD in philosophy or related fields required at the time of the appointment.

The successful candidate will be affiliated with the Rock Ethics Institute (http://rockethics.psu.edu/) as one of a transformative series of tenure-track appointments designed to ensure that Penn State becomes a leader in ethics-informed interdisciplinary research and the integration of ethical literacy throughout the University curriculum. The Rock Ethics Institute seeks candidates who will be effective in working on and leading interdisciplinary teams that embed ethical analysis into research projects and who have experience and interest in integrating ethics into undergraduate and graduate curricula. Faculty who are hired will receive a one-course release for the first five years for enhancing existing ethics research and curricular initiatives as well as building new initiatives and programs aligned with the Institute’s mission.

Interested applicants should submit the following materials: (1) a cover letter (2) a Curriculum Vitae, (3) 3-5 page research statement, (4) a one-page teaching statement, (5) a statement of how the candidate’s work is relevant to the Rock Ethics Institute’s mission and how a position within the Institute is likely to augment their own work, and (6) contact information of 3-5 professional references. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. We encourage applications from individuals of diverse backgrounds. Inquiries about the position may be directed to [email protected].  Apply online at https://psu.jobs/job/72915
