The Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies is seeking a Senior university lecturer in Practical philosophy.

The Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies at Umeå University’s Faculty of Humanities conducts education and research in the fields of archaeology, philosophy, history, history of ideas, religious studies and theology. Philosophy offers study programmes and degrees at first-cycle (undergraduate), second-cycle (Master’s) and third-cycle (doctoral) level. Description and work duties
The appointee’s tasks include teaching at first-cycle (undergraduate), second-cycle (Master’s) and third-cycle (doctoral) level, research, administrative work and also taking part in staff meetings. Courses are given both on campus and on the internet. A position as Senior university lecturer includes 20% research and 80% teaching and administration.

Eligibility requirements
One is eligible for the position if one holds a doctorate in practical philosophy or in philosophy with an orientation towards practical philosophy or has equivalent academic competence or other professional skill relevant to with the subject area of the appointment, has shown pedagogical skill and has obtained pedagogical education or equivalent capacities.

Evaluation criteria
The evaluation criteria are: scientific competence and pedagogic skills in the area of practical philosophy, administrative ability, the ability to develop and manage members of staff, the ability to cooperate and work with others in research and teaching, and the ability to interact with the surrounding community and to spread knowledge about research and development within the field of philosophy.

Scientific competence must have been demonstrated through independent research output. The criteria for assessing scientific competence are:

  • Breadth and depth of research, including quality and scope
  • Originality of research
  • Productivity
  • Contributions to the international research community
  • Assignments within the research community
  • The ability to obtain external research funds in the face of competition.

A candidate’s pedagogic skills shall be assessed from three different perspectives: the teacher’s work with students; the teacher’s own pedagogic development; and the teacher’s contributions to pedagogic developments at an institutional level.  In order to qualify for appointment as teacher, the applicant is required to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and approaches in relation to higher education pedagogy: 

  • Knowledge regarding students’ learning within higher education 
  • Ability to plan, teach, examine, and evaluate higher education courses and programmes as well as support the learning of individuals and groups 
  • Ability to adopt a reflexive approach in relation to his or her own role as teacher 
  • Knowledge regarding societal objectives and regulations concerning higher education 
  • Ability to make use of, analyse and communicate his or her own experiences as well as those of others.

A substantial part of the teaching included in the position is focussed on the following core areas of practical philosophy: ethics (including metaethics) and political philosophy. Particular weight will be given to scientific competence and pedagogic skills within these core areas of practical philosophy.

A good knowledge of Swedish (or another Scandinavian language) and English, as well as the ability to teach in these languages, are requirements for the position. Within one year of commencing employment, the successful candidate must be able to take on work duties that require the ability to communicate in Swedish.

Weighting of evaluation criteria
Particular importance will be attached to scientific competence and pedagogic skills. The examination of pedagogic skills shall be treated with equal care as the examination of scientific competence. When balancing between these evaluation criteria, they will be given equal importance. In addition, importance will be attached to the other evaluation criteria.
