Assistant/Associate Professor in History of Philosophy

University of Massachusetts Lowell

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Massachusetts Lowell seeks applications for a tenure track faculty member. The Department will hire either an Assistant or an Associate position.

Candidates at either rank or encouraged to apply if they have areas of specialization (AOSs) in the history of philosophy broadly construed: ancient philosophy, modern philosophy, 19th century or non-Western philosophy. Ideal candidates will have a sustained track record of publishing in prestigious venues and demonstrate the ability to write for a wider, non-academic public. Candidates should be comfortable teaching broadly in the history of philosophy and be willing to develop online courses. French and German language proficiency is also an asset for candidates.

The Philosophy Department currently consists of nine full-time faculty members. We offer a B.A. degree in philosophy with optional concentrations in both Communications and Religious Studies. Faculty have the opportunity to engage with a range of interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate degree programs. UMass Lowell is a public national research university with more than 18,000 students; it is ranked as a top-tier national university by U.S. News and World Report.

The standard teaching load is 3/3 but faculty who meet University standards for research productivity are eligible for a 2/2 load. Service to the Department and University is expected as well.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Ph.D. in Philosophy, ABD will be considered but doctoral requirements must be completed by the time of appointment
  • The ability to work effectively with diverse groups

Candidates should describe past experience with and future interest in leadership roles at the professional, University, and Departmental levels, and should describe how their research and teaching strengths complement the current strengths of the Department.
