Instructor, Assistant, or Associate Professor – Critical Thinking (Fall 2018)–Job ID#17487

The Department of Academic Literacy and Linguistics at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) at the City University of New York (CUNY) is seeking dynamic candidates for a tenure-track position at the rank of Instructor, Assistant or Associate Professor in Critical Thinking, commencing in August 2018.

With students from over 155 countries, BMCC is an international community college that embraces diversity, community building, and innovation. Located in Tribeca, BMCC is as exciting and dynamic as New York City, welcoming students from extensively diverse backgrounds and guiding them to become an integral part of the community at large. BMCC has a long-standing reputation for excellence in matters related to career building and professional discovery. Within this context, the Academic Literacy and Linguistics Department has two distinct functions: (1) to offer courses that help students develop reading and writing skills needed for continued academic progress; and (2) to offer courses open to the general college population to hone analytical and communication skills and to broaden students’ understanding of language structure and use across region, cultures, and societies.

We seek a hire that can contribute to this work. Duties include teaching Critical Thinking and at least one of the following: Academic and Critical Reading, ESL Writing, or Linguistics. Institutional service is required, as is productive scholarship. Night and/or weekend courses may also be required. As a small department at a large public college with an emphasis not only on teaching, but on research as well, heavy preference will be given to those candidates with a demonstrated aptitude for teaching and learning in intellectually and demographically diverse environments. Urban community college teaching experience with a multicultural and multilingual student body is strongly preferred. Experience teaching Developmental Reading or ESL Writing, Literacy Studies, or Linguistics is a plus.

Area of specialization of candidates is open and include but is not limited to Logic, Epistemology, Critical Race Theory, Border Studies, Philosophy of Language, and Critical Literacy.

Responsibilities include teaching, engaging and mentoring a very diverse student body at a large urban public college. The successful candidate must have a commitment to the intellectual and personal growth of students that is the core mission of BMCC. This involves the ability to work with organizations within and outside BMCC to prepare students for degree completion, successful transfer, career achievement, and lifelong learning. Research and publication are expected for tenure and promotion.

Assistant or Associate Professors must have a Ph.D. in hand, preferably in philosophy, or related field, or an Ed. D. combined with active engagement in the discipline of philosophy through scholarship and research. The candidates should demonstrate potential for a promising record of significant research achievement in Critical Thinking along with excellent pedagogy.

Instructors must have an M.A. in hand with doctoral work in progress may be considered, ABD preferred, for hire as Instructor. Those appointed in the Instructor title are only eligible for five (5) annual appointments. Appointment to a professorial title subsequent to service as Instructor will only be considered if the candidate has obtained the qualifications for professorial rank as stated above.

Experience with teaching and learning technologies preferred.

CUNY offers faculty a competitive compensation and benefits package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs.
