Assistant Director of Health Care Ethics

Department: Markkula Ctr for Applied Ethic

Fixed Term End Date: One-year from appointment

Position Summary Information

Position Purpose

This position will assist the Director of Bioethics in managing the Health Care Ethics program for the Ethics Center. Areas of responsibility will include undergraduate, professional, and community education.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Serve as instructor, i.e., “faculty of record,” for the Health Care Ethics Internship including facilitating biweekly ethics reflection sessions.

2. Prepare materials for the Ethics Center website on health care ethics.

3. Develop and execute research regarding ethical dilemmas encountered in health care and health care delivery.

4. Provide clinical ethics consultation for the Ethics Center’s contracted health care partners.

5. Provide ethics education and policy review and development for the Ethics Center’s contracted health care partners.

6. Develop materials and opportunities for bioethics education for local and global communities.

7. Respond as appropriate to media and other inquiries received by the Ethics Center.

8. Other duties as assigned by Director of Bioethics.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

A. Serve as Instructor for the Health Care Ethics Internship.

1. Serve as the faculty of record, including syllabus preparation, course instruction, and student evaluation.

2. Develop and deliver ethics curriculum.

3. Facilitate and monitor students’ participation in ethics reflection sessions and monitor completion of written assignments.

4. Monitor students’ activities and evaluate their participation quarterly.

5. Co-supervise a student fellow.

6. Recruit students to participate in program, as needed.

7. Serve on the “admission committee” for the Internship and selection committee for the annual undergraduate fellow.

8. Develop additional clinical opportunities and sites for student interns, as needed.

9. Participate in annual program evaluation.

10. Prepare reports on program for the Ethics Center, as asked.

11. Manage development, fulfillment, and renewal of Internship contract(s).

B. Media Commentary & Website Development.

1. Provide commentary on current and emerging issues in health care ethics including op-eds and blog posts.

2. In collaboration with the Director of Bioethics and with the Communications Director, develop and coordinate desired materials for website.

3. Research and write materials for Ethics Center website on health care ethics.

4. Review, assess, and make recommendations regarding bioethics content on the Center’s website.

5. Explore and, if indicated, facilitate the development of one or more bioethics MOOCs.

C. Clinical Ethics Consultation, Education, and Policy Development

1. Provide ethics expertise and consultation services to the Center’s contracted partners.

2. Develop health care ethics education at contracted sites.

3. Engage in policy development and review on behalf of contracted sites and in response to other requests.

4. Provide health care ethics education in both clinical and community settings.

5. Manage contracts and billing for contracted sites, including active participation in the contracting process and contract renewals.

6. Represent the Director of Bioethics as requested.

D. Research

1. Develop and execute research projects in health care ethics.

2. Manage research protocols including IRB approvals.

3. Explore funding sources for specific research projects.

4. Direct student research assistants, as needed.

E. Health Care Ethics Program Administration.

1. Assist the Director of Bioethics with overall planning and administration of program as directed.

2. Confer frequently with the Director of Bioethics

3. Other duties as assigned.

1. Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices.

2. Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools; planned training and performance initiatives, including preparation and administration of program budget

3. Researches and develops resources that create timely and efficient workflow.

4. Prepares progress reports; informs supervisor of project status; and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational functions.

5. Develops and implements guidelines to support the functions of the unit.

Knowledge

• Experience and understanding of ethical issues in the health professions, e.g., nursing ethics, surgical ethics, highly desirable.

• Appreciation of and commitment to further the mission, values, and goals of Santa Clara University and the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics.

Skills

• Experience and demonstrated skill in teaching.

• Experience and demonstrated skill in health care ethics in an academic or clinical setting, preferably both.

• Experience and demonstrated skill in ethical decision-making, education, and policy development in clinical settings.

• Excellent written and oral communications skills.

• Excellent interpersonal skills.

• Experience and demonstrated skill in program administration

• Experience in qualitative and/or quantitative research highly desirable.

• Experience addressing ethical issues regarding end of life care and hospice care highly desirable.

Abilities

• Ability to work collaboratively with Ethics Center staff and community partners.

• Ability to work within a diverse and multicultural work environment

Education and/or Experience

Education

• Bachelor’s Degree required;

• Preferred: Advanced training in medical ethics as demonstrated by a master’s or doctoral degree in medical ethics or a relevant area; or, a relevant master’s or professional degree, preferably along with formal training in clinical ethics, e.g., successful completion of an intensive program in clinical ethics.

Years of Experience

• 5 – 6 years of related experience in health care ethics, clinical ethics, or related area

Salary Information

Hiring range: $2668.83 - 3137.67 semi-monthly, commensurates with experience
