Job description

The department of philosophy at Stockholm University invites applications for a position as Senior Lecturer  (Associate Professor) in Practical Philosophy. Applications are welcome from candidates with expertise in any aspect of political philosophy, broadly conceived.

Main responsibilities
The primary duties of the appointee will be (i) research in political philosophy, broadly conceived; (ii) both undergraduate teaching and postgraduate supervision in Practical Philosophy (especially in political philosophy). Political philosophy, broadly conceived, includes the following topics, among others: philosophical theories of fundamental political notions, such justice, equality, freedom, democracy, and rights; the philosophy of economics; social choice; game theory and decision theory, with applications to societal problems.

Since formal methods are used in important areas of political philosophy, special consideration will be given to competence in these methods, which include social choice, decision theory, and game theory.

In addition, the appointee will be expected actively to seek external funding, to support research at the department. He or she will also be expected to participate in departmental administration.

The appointment includes a minimum of 50% paid research time during the first few years, and a minimum of 40% paid research time thereafter. The appointee will be entitled to generous parental leave entitlements and similar benefits. Please see https://www.forsakringskassan.se for further details.

Qualification requirements
Qualified candidates will have a PhD or equivalent in Philosophy at the time of appointment with a specialisation in political philosophy, broadly construed. Candidates will have demonstrated competence in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and a willingness to take part in academic leadership.

A general assessment criterion is the ability to work with other people, as well as other general abilities required to perform one’s duties.

Assessment criteria
In the appointment process, special and equal emphasis will be given to research skills, as demonstrated by the candidate’s record of scholarship, and excellence in teaching, as demonstrated by the candidate’s teaching portfolio. In addition, some weight will be placed on demonstrated competence in administration and willingness and ability to collaborate with others and perform the primary duties of the post well.

Stockholm University is an equal opportunities employer. We particularly encourage applications from women and others that have been traditionally underrepresented.

Teaching and learning in higher education
It is desirable for candidates to have successfully completed a course in university teaching, or to demonstrate equivalent pedagogical competence acquired through teaching experience. An appointee who has no teaching qualifications or equivalent experience will be required to complete successfully a university teaching course within the first two years of the appointment.

Additional information
Swedish language skills at the time of entering the position is not required. Within a couple of years, the applicant should, however, be prepared to carry out certain teaching and administrative tasks that require knowledge of the Swedish language. To some extent, time for studies in Swedish can be included in the working hours.

Stockholm University strives to be a workplace free from discrimination and with equal opportunities for all.
