Job description

The School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership at Arizona State University (https://scetl.asu.edu/) invites applications for a full-time tenure-eligible position in Classical Liberal Education.  Rank and tenure status will be commensurate with experience. The candidate will develop a new Master of Arts program in Classical Liberal Education and Leadership, with anticipated start date of August 2018.  U.S. News and World Report has ranked Arizona State University as the most innovative university in the country for the past three years, ahead of Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute for Technology. Contributing to that no. 1 ranking with regard to “Innovation in Leadership” is the new School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership, which aims to create a new kind of leader, blending tradition and innovation, and reviving the nexus of classical liberal education and civic education.

The School is launching a Master of Arts degree for teachers and adult learners interested in deeper study of the Western intellectual tradition.  The focus will be study of great works, debates, and themes of classical liberal education but an important theme will be civic questions of character and leadership.  The program and its curriculum will be conducted partly through on-campus immersion in the summer and partly online during the academic year.  As with any Arizona State University professor, the successful candidate will be expected to develop a research program, engage undergraduate and graduate students through effective teaching, participate in service to the university and profession, and build productive relationships with faculty both within and beyond the School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership.

Required qualifications include: a doctorate in political science, history, philosophy, classics, religion, or closely related field by time of appointment; dissertation or research focused on an important work, theme, or area of the Western intellectual tradition; an active research program with clear potential for excellence in research activity and publications; evidence of university teaching experience.  Desired qualifications: interest and ability to teach courses spanning the Western intellectual tradition and the recognized works and themes of classical liberal education; interest in study, teaching and discussion of civic education and leadership as a component of the great texts and debates of the Western tradition and liberal education; experience with graduate teaching; experience with education programs for school teachers; demonstrated success meeting the needs of diverse student populations and/or reaching out to diverse communities.
