General Summary of Position:

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Massachusetts Lowell seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate/Fellow. The Postdoctoral Research Associate/Fellow will conduct research as part of a National Science Foundation-awarded grant “Ethical Algorithms in Autonomous Vehicles,” under the supervision of Assistant Professor Nicholas G. Evans. The fellow will be appointed for a period of two years. Duties will include conducting and coordinating research activities associated with the funded project, protected research time for the fellow’s own research trajectory, and teaching in the University’s Engineering and Ethics program.

The Department of Philosophy at UML consists of nine full-time members. We offer a BA degree in philosophy, and conduct teaching in engineering ethics within the UML Francis College of Engineering. UML is a public national research university in the University of Massachusetts system with 17,000 undergraduate students; it is ranked as a top-tier national university by US News and World Report.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Ph.D. in hand at the time of employment in philosophy or a related discipline
  • A track record of philosophical analysis in ethics and/or applied ethics
  • Experiencing preparing conference presentations/posters and journal articles
  • Some experience teaching philosophy at the undergraduate level
  • Conference organization skills are desirable but not required
  • Ability to work as a team player
  • Strong technical report writing and communication skills
  • Competence in teaching undergraduate philosophy

Additional Considerations:

The position of Postdoctoral Research Associate is tied to an NSF funded project, and will involve working under pressure to strict deadlines.
