Job description

Bentley University, renowned for integrating the study of the arts and sciences with a world-class business education, invites inquiries, nominations and applications for the position of dean of arts and sciences.

Bentley’s evolution over the past century reflects an institutional history of innovation. Its transformation from a local accounting school to a nationally recognized university is a function of its ambition, strong values and visionary leadership. As Bentley embarks on its second century, it seeks a dean of arts and sciences who will play an integral role in refining and redefining the hallmark of a Bentley education. In partnership with the dean of business, the interim provost and a president to be named in the coming months, the next dean of arts and sciences will have an unprecedented and exciting platform from which to shape not only the future of Bentley University but to influence the future of undergraduate education in our nation and beyond.

A private institution located on a classic New England campus in Waltham, Massachusetts, just minutes from Boston, Bentley University enrolls approximately 4,300 undergraduate, 1,000 graduate and 24 doctoral students. Bentley offers 24 undergraduate majors; full- and part-time M.B.A. programs and eight master’s degrees in other business-related disciplines; and Ph.D. programs in business and accountancy. U.S. News & World Report ranks Bentley No. 2 on its list of best undergraduate programs among regional universities in the North and No. 32 on its list of top online graduate business programs.

Reporting to the provost, the next dean will oversee eight academic departments and work closely with an outstanding faculty and staff, providing inspirational leadership to forge new initiatives and unite an academic community to address institutional challenges. The next dean will be an articulate and compelling spokesperson for the importance of the arts and sciences to an exceptional business education as well as to the intellectual and civic development of students. The dean will help lead a review of Bentley’s general education curriculum; advance strategic priorities and shape new institutional goals; strengthen an institutional commitment to diversity and inclusion; be a tireless advocate for faculty development; serve as a champion of the university’s growing research initiatives; and foster innovation across the institution. Through exceptional leadership, colleagueship and collaboration, the dean will help Bentley to build upon its distinctive strengths, enhance its academic excellence and secure its position as a leading national university.

The successful candidate will bring a strong record of scholarship, a demonstrated commitment to education, strong management and operational experience and the interpersonal and relationship-building skills to help Bentley realize its strategic goals. The next dean will have a doctoral degree or equivalent and academic achievements sufficient to merit appointment as a tenured, full professor.

Inquiries, nominations and applications are invited. For fullest consideration, applicant materials should be received as soon as possible but no later than February 16, 2018. Candidates should provide a CV, a letter of application and the names of five references. References will not be contacted without prior approval.
