Job description

Assistant Director of the Bioethics Program

The Bioethics Program at The Pennsylvania State University seeks applicants for Assistant Director. The position is a full-time, non-tenure line appointment, starting on or before August 2018. Penn State's Bioethics Program offers a novel dual-title Ph.D. program in bioethics that allows and requires students to combine bioethics with another discipline in their dissertation as well as their coursework. The Bioethics Program also offers minors in bioethics at the doctoral, master's, and undergraduate levels. Students in our program study bioethics broadly construed to include (among others) public health ethics, food ethics, and environmental ethics. Bioethics faculty and students also participate in events and activities of the Rock Ethics Institute. Candidates for the position should hold a doctoral or professional degree in a field related to bioethics. The successful candidate will work with the director of the Bioethics Program to build and expand the program. The assistant director's responsibilities will include building new collaborations for the dual-title Ph.D. and servicing existing relationships with dual-title partners; grant writing to support the development of the program and bioethics-related research; participating in collaborative research projects related to the Bioethics Program, and the Rock's Ethics and Health Initiative; exploring and reporting on the feasibility of a professional master's degree in bioethics at Penn State, and of an undergraduate dual major in bioethics; reconfiguring the undergraduate minor in bioethics; expanding course offerings; planning and coordination of bioethics-related seminars, lectures, and conferences; attending and facilitating the bioethics colloquium; working in a support role with the undergraduate and graduate students; obtaining student feedback on their experience in the program and its impact on their careers; and overseeing the development of a new website for the program. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor and will teach in the bioethics program, and is expected to maintain an active research profile in bioethics. The initial appointment is for two years, with opportunity for renewal by mutual agreement. How to Apply: Candidates should submit an online application and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to Joanne Nash at mailto:[email protected]. A complete application will include: a cover letter explaining how the applicant's background and experience qualifies them for the position; a curriculum vitae; a scholarly paper (not to exceed 10,000 words); and three letters of recommendation. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
