Tenure-Track position in Philosophy - Smart, Sustainable and Resilient Communities and Cities

The Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts and Science at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, invites applications for a tenure-track appointment for a scholar whose research engages with and complements Concordia’s Canada Excellence Research Chair and as part of the University’s cluster hiring initiative in the area of “Smart, Sustainable and Resilient Communities and Cities”. The position is open to any philosopher whose research engages in issues related to this area.

About the Faculty
The Faculty of Arts and Science (FAS) is a federation of foundational disciplines and a generator of fundamental knowledge and scholarship. About the Department
The Department of Philosophy brings the philosophy of values, philosophy of the sciences, and philosophy of human identity & difference into a dynamic intersection. This dynamic intersection helps advance research and teaching both in and beyond philosophy, on topics ranging from climate change and biodiversity to global justice, gender, and embodiment. The expertise, scholarship and publications of our faculty extends across a spectrum of work in analytic philosophy, history of philosophy, and continental philosophy.

Candidate Profile and Qualifications
We are seeking a philosopher whose research profile constitutes a critical approach to issues related to “Smart, Sustainable and Resilient Communities and Cities” and who will demonstrate the important contributions that philosophy and the humanities can make in this area. Interdisciplinary linkages will be an asset. Examples include, but are not limited to, philosophers working on:

  • sustainable and socially just modes of community formation and resource use;
  • the ethical/human aspects of relations between cities/communities & their environments;
  • critical analysis of big data and implications of the technological infrastructure of smart cities.

AOS and AOC is otherwise open. The Department is searching for an outstanding scholar engaged in innovative and potentially ground-breaking work, in the above areas, who can also help us advance our defining focus on the nexus of science, values, and identity & difference. We are seeking a strong teacher who will contribute to our teaching strengths, be active in our graduate program, and be capable of developing and renewing our curriculum. Normally, the teaching load for an active researcher is 12 credits (4 courses) per year. Candidates should have a PhD.
