Job description |
The Department of Philosophy, Theology, and Religion invites applications for a tenure-track position in Philosophy at our main campus in Saint Leo, Florida starting in August 2018. A Ph.D. in philosophy is required. The area of specialization for the position is Continental Philosophy, broadly construed. The area of competency is open, but we will give strong preference to candidates with a firm grounding in the history of philosophy, a demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary dialogue, and an ability to engage with historically underrepresented perspectives. Candidates should have a passion for undergraduate teaching and employ a wide variety of pedagogical strategies to meet the diverse needs of a campus population that includes many first-generation, military, international, and other non-traditional students. While most of the teaching for this position will be in a traditional classroom setting, there are opportunities to deliver courses online as well. Experience with online teaching is a plus. The standard teaching load is 4:4 and is focused within the University Explorations core curriculum. Philosophy currently offers two courses within University Explorations - Philosophy of Religion (PHI110) and Ethics (PHI210). Successful candidates should not only be prepared to teach both of these courses, but also be able to contribute to a broad array of undergraduate offerings in philosophy. Enthusiasm for program and course design, particularly with an emphasis on interdisciplinary study and inclusivity, is a significant asset. In addition, strong candidates will demonstrate a willingness to teach at the graduate level. Currently, we offer Philosophical Foundations of Theology (PHI502) as part of the Department’s Master’s program in Theology. Many of these courses are taught within the context of Catholic Diaconate Formation programs in various dioceses throughout the southeastern United States. We are looking for a candidate who is open to occasionally travelling and teaching on weekends as part of this program. Most importantly, effective teaching within this program requires an ability to present philosophy in a way that is compelling to those studying theology. Review of candidate materials will begin immediately. To ensure full consideration, completed applications must be received by April 6th, 2018. Online applications should include a letter of application, curriculum vitae, values statement, statement of teaching philosophy, and student evaluations. The values statement (500 words or less) asks candidates to address how their teaching aligns with the core values and mission of Saint Leo University (For reference, see www.saintleo.edu/history-values-catholic-roots) We also require three letters of recommendation that should be mailed hardcopy to: Attn: Veronica Mantegna Saint Leo University Academic Affairs – MC 2006 PO Box 6665 Saint Leo, Florida 33574 If you are unable to mail your letters, please include contact information for references on your CV, or in a separate document. Official transcripts will be required for hire, but are not required at the time of application. Short-listed candidates may be asked to submit additional materials, such as a writing sample and sample syllabi. Please direct any inquiries to Timothy Jussaume, Assistant Professor of Philosophy ([email protected]). |
