Job description

Visiting Professor

Philosophy

Xavier University invites applications for a non-tenure-track, yearly-renewable Visiting Professor of Philosophy, starting in Fall 2018. The Visiting Professor position is renewable on a yearly basis, up to three years. We are looking especially for candidates with a strong background in the history of philosophy, dedicated to teaching from primary sources.  AOS and AOC are open, but we have no need for political philosophy at present.

The successful candidate will join Xavier faculty in the 500-year-old Jesuit Catholic tradition of academic excellence in the liberal arts serving a diverse population of students. Xavier’s location in Cincinnati allows faculty to work with community partners to develop engaged learning and internship opportunities. Xavier is a member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities as well as the Big East. For twenty years in a row, the U.S. News and World Report has ranked Xavier University among the top 10 Midwest colleges and universities.

Position Responsibilities

The position is full-time, with a 4/4 teaching load, responsible for teaching PHIL100:  Ethics as Introduction to Philosophy, or PHIL200, the focus of which varies with the professor.  However, all sections of PHIL100 should treat Plato’s Republic; all sections of PHIL200 should treat Descartes’ Discourse on Method.

Required Qualifications

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in philosophy, or be nearing the completion of their dissertations. We especially invite women and minority candidates to apply.

Application

To apply, please submit a dossier that includes a cover letter, a current curriculum vitae, three references that can speak especially to teaching experience, along with any other evidence of teaching excellence. Candidates should also submit sample syllabi for our PHIL100 and PHIL200 classes. Contact the chair, Timothy Sean Quinn, for further information about these courses:  [email protected].  Submit all application materials to https://www.xavier.edu/working-at-xavier/. To ensure full consideration, all materials must be received by April 16, 2018.

Please note:  only 5 attachments can be uploaded during the application process online; please consolidate documents if necessary.
