Associate Director of Health Care Ethics (Fixed-Term) Santa Clara University Department: Markkula Ctr for Applied Ethic Part Year: No FLSA Status: Exempt Standard Hours (hours per week): 40 Position Purpose: The Associate Director of Health Care Ethics is a senior-level position assisting the Director of Bioethics in managing the Bioethics program for the Ethics Center. Areas of responsibility will include: program development, management, and assessment; ethics consultation with community partners; undergraduate, professional, and community education; contract management; and communication. This position reports to the Director of Bioethics. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Provide clinical ethics consultation including assessment of effectiveness for the Ethics Center’s contracted health care partners 2. Provide ethics education and policy review and development for the Ethics Center’s contracted health care partners 3. Develop materials and opportunities for bioethics education for local and global communities 4. Prepare materials for the Ethics Center website on bioethics including the Center’s blog 5. Develop and execute research regarding ethical dilemmas encountered in health care in areas such as health care delivery, ethics consultation, ethics education, and organizational ethics 6. Respond as appropriate to media and other inquiries received by the Ethics Center 7. Other duties as assigned by Director of Bioethics SPECIFIC DUTIES 1. Clinical Ethics Consultation, Education, and Policy Development a. Provide ethics expertise and consultation services to the Center’s contracted partners b. Develop health care ethics education at contracted sites c. Engage in policy development and review on behalf of contracted sites and in response to other requests d. Provide health care ethics education in both clinical and community settings e. Maintain contact with community partners and solicit feedback for improved services f. Manage contracts and billing for contracted sites, including active participation in the contracting process and contract renewals for consultation and for the Center’s Health Care Ethics Internship g. Develop and steward relationships with contracted partners h. Identify and develop additional consulting relationships as appropriate 2. Media Commentary & Website Development. a. Respond, as appropriate, to media inquiries b. Provide commentary on current and emerging issues in health care ethics, including op-eds and blog posts c. In collaboration with the Director of Bioethics and with the Communications Director, develop and coordinate desired materials for website d. Research and write materials for Ethics Center website on bioethics e. Review, assess, and make recommendations regarding bioethics content on the Center’s website f. Explore and, if indicated, facilitate the development of one or more bioethics MOOCs 3. Research a. Develop and execute research projects in bioethics b. Manage research protocols including but not limited to: IRB approvals, budget management, report management, and project management including benchmarking and workflow c. Explore funding sources for specific research projects d. Direct research component of the Honzel Fellowship e. Direct student research assistants, as needed 4. Bioethics Program Administration a. Administer bioethics-related events b. Assist the Director of Bioethics with overall planning and administration of bioethics unit c. Prepare and submit progress and other reports as requested and required d. Inform supervisor of status of all projects and of deviation from goals and timeline e. Develop and implement guidelines to support the functions of the bioethics unit f. Explore fund-raising opportunities and participate in fund-raising activities, as appropriate g. Assess programs and make suggestions to improve level of results. h. Confer frequently with the Director of Bioethics. 5. Skills: • Experience and demonstrated skill in consultation, education, and policy (institutional and public) development in bioethics, preferably in a hospital setting • Experience and demonstrated teaching skill in university or professional environments or equivalent • Experience and demonstrated skill in program administration • Experience and demonstrated skill in qualitative and/or quantitative research in bioethics or equivalent • Experience in contracting highly desirable • Experience with Human Subject protocols highly desirable • Experience addressing ethical issues regarding end of life care and hospice care highly desirable • Excellent written and oral communications skills • Excellent interpersonal skills Abilities: • Ability to work collaboratively with Ethics Center staff, health care professionals, and community partners • Ability to work within a diverse and multicultural work environment Education and/or Experience: Education • Bachelor’s Degree required • Preferred: Advanced training in medical ethics as demonstrated by a master’s or doctoral degree in medical ethics or a relevant area; or, a relevant master’s or professional degree, preferably along with formal training in clinical ethics, e.g., successful completion of an intensive program in clinical ethics. Years of Experience • Minimum 5 years of related experience and demonstrated skill in bioethics in an academic or health care setting, preferably both Salary Information: Hiring Range: $2668.83 - $3,606.54 semi-monthly, commensurate with experience Close Date: Open Until Filled: Yes Special Instructions to Applicants: This is a fixed term position ending one year from appointment, with the possibility of extension or conversion to regular status based on funding and business need.
