Job description

Position in Philosophy – Metaethics

The Department of Philosophy of the University of California, Davis announces a Visiting Assistant Professor position (one year, renewable for a second year with satisfactory research, teaching and service), beginning in Fall 2018, salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. The Area of Specialization (AOS) for the position is metaethics. The Area of Competence (AOC) is open, but normative ethical theories or philosophy of language is preferred. Although the AOC is open, the Department has programmatic needs in a variety of fields, including especially normative ethics, language, history of modern philosophy, and epistemology. The successful candidate will be expected to play an active role in the life of the Department in research as well as instruction at all levels and some mentoring service to graduate students.

Duties include research, a teaching load of four quarter courses per year, and graduate mentorship service. The successful candidate will be expected to carry out a research program in metaethics. The appointee will be required to teach undergraduate courses at both the introductory and advanced levels and possibly a graduate level course in his or her area of specialization. A special service duty of this visiting position is mentoring graduate students by participating in DaGERS, our weekly ethics discussion group.

The principal qualifications for the candidate are a strong research record and the ability to teach at the undergraduate and graduate level. Ph.D. in Philosophy or related field is required.
