Job Description:

Lawrence University emphasizes the liberal education of its students, thus, faculty must have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, commitment to inclusion and diversity, broad teaching competencies and an ongoing program of high quality scholarship.

The Assistant Professor of Philosophy will lead the development of the history of philosophy curriculum, and teach a full course-load of undergraduate Philosophy courses; note that Lawrence is on a ten-week trimester system.  Primary duties include: lecturing, grading student work, advising and mentoring students, and collaborating with department faculty on lesson plan and syllabus development, curriculum planning, staffing and hiring decisions, and related departmental and institutional duties.  The required teaching course-load of six philosophy classes annually will include: history of philosophy, including early modern and ancient Greek philosophy, logic, and courses that apply philosophical concepts to contemporary and interdisciplinary issues. 

In addition, all permanent professors at Lawrence University, including the person who fills this position, are required to teach one section of Lawrence’s Freshman Studies class on an intermittent basis, currently about every other year.  The Freshman Studies curriculum presents an interdisciplinary introduction to the liberal arts intended to support new students’ fundamental skills as readers, writers and thinkers.  

Applicants must have a PhD in Philosophy, with a specialization in history of philosophy, at the time of application.
