Job description

Lehman College is a Senior College in The City University of New York (CUNY) system committed to an undergraduate liberal arts education and to active research and publication. Located in the Bronx, it has a diverse student body of more than 14,000 students, and is recognized for its small classes and close interaction between students and faculty. In 2017, Lehman College was ranked as having the 4th highest mobility rate in the nation by the National Bureau of Economic Research and the Equality of Opportunity Project.

We invite applications for a full-time, tenured or tenure-track position in Philosophy, beginning in the fall of 2019. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or full Professor. The area of specialization is open, but we have teaching needs in the areas of Ancient Philosophy, Philosophy of Science, Metaphysics, Epistemology, Non-Western Philosophy, and Feminist Philosophy.

The successful candidate will join a department that is growing and vibrant. The number of majors and minors has been increasing. Our course offerings include courses in Western and non-Western philosophy, ethics, social and political philosophy, history of philosophy, logic, language and mind, and applied philosophy, and often emphasize interdisciplinary connections. We seek candidates with a strong scholarly background who will broaden our offerings and help grow the major.

Beginning in 2020, Lehman faculty teach 18 hours (6 courses) per year, and are expected to participate in the department’s service responsibilities. For junior faculty, the teaching commitment is reduced by eight courses over the first five years in order to assist with research. Faculty are also eligible to apply for competitive internal Lehman College and CUNY grants to support their research.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in philosophy by the start date (August 26, 2019). Also required is the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
