RUTGERS UNIVERSITY/NEWARK, Newark, NJ. The Department of Philosophy at Rutgers University-Newark (RU-N) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Philosophy at the Assistant Professor level, based at RU-N, to begin September 2019. We are seeking candidates whose area(s) of specialization is ethics and/or social and political philosophy.  The area(s) of competence are open to subdisciplines within contemporary philosophy.

Committed to building a cluster of faculty around interdisciplinary Computer Science, Data Science, and AI, we also are hiring in the areas of Design/Visualization and Machine Learning. We seek candidates who have a dynamic and interdisciplinary conception of their research, who can contribute to research and teaching in their areas, and as a core around which to build a new research center, graduate program, and undergraduate programs in interdisciplinary Computer Science, Data Science, and AI. The successful candidate could contribute to this program through scholarship and teaching focused on the implications of data and algorithms for people and society. Relevant topics are issues of privacy, security, and artificial intelligence, especially as they relate to issues of authority, freedom, democracy, equality and justice.

Responsibilities: The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching introductory and upper-level courses in philosophy in the applicant’s area of expertise.  The successful candidate will also teach graduate courses in a planned interdisciplinary program in data science and interdisciplinary computer science.  Candidates must undertake independent scholarly activity appropriate for advancement within Rutgers University. Candidates will also be responsible for usual advising and administrative duties.

Requirements: Ph.D. by time of appointment; relevant teaching experience; a record of scholarly work and a clear research agenda, demonstrating the ability to build a body of recognized work suitable for tenure at a research university.
