Job description

The University of California, Irvine invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Philosophy of Cosmology. The Fellowship will provide an outstanding early-career scholar in philosophy of physics with a unique opportunity to pursue research in collaboration with physicists and philosophers, in particular with project members in the UC Irvine Center for Cosmology.

The Fellow will be affiliated with the Department of Logic & Philosophy of Science at the University of California, Irvine, one of the world’s strongest departments in philosophy of science. The Fellow will be supervised by James Weatherall. Irvine faculty members include leading scholars on a variety of topics in philosophy of physics, including foundations of quantum mechanics, foundations of spacetime theories, and on general issues regarding methodology and evidential reasoning.

The Postdoctoral Fellowship has a duration of up to two years. The initial appointment is for one year, with renewals annually conditional on satisfactory performance. The Fellow will have access to shared office space in the Department of Logic & Philosophy of Science. Fellows are expected to participate fully in the research life of the Department by conducting research leading to peer reviewed publications and conference presentations, and by participating in conferences, research groups, reading groups, and outreach activities. There are no teaching obligations associated with this position, but Fellows are expected to contribute to graduate student mentorship.

The start date for the Fellowship is negotiable, with a preference for 1 January 2019. Candidates must have had a PhD in philosophy of physics or a related field conferred within five years of the start of theFellowship. All PhD requirements must be completed by the starting date of this Postdoctoral Fellowship. The salary is competitive, and depends on background and experience of the applicant.
