Job description

Director, Frederick Douglass Institute for African & African American Studies, University of Rochester, NY, USA

The University of Rochester’s School of Arts & Sciences invites faculty applications for the new Director of the Frederick Douglass Institute for African & African American Studies (FDI).  (http://www.sas.rochester.edu/aas/index.html.)  We are looking for a dynamic leader who will guide intellectual pursuits and exchange in this field and, with the full support of the College’s administration, enhance the role and status of FDI, leading it to national prominence in research and teaching.

FDI brings together faculty and students from across academic disciplines to engage collaboratively on topics of shared interest in the study of the African diaspora; it is an interdepartmental program offering an undergraduate major and minor, a graduate certificate, and pre- and post-doctoral fellowships.  FDI also contributes greatly to academic programming on campus through lectures, conferences, and a film series.  The new Director will oversee these activities and will be invited to envision and pursue new possibilities for FDI.

The successful candidate will be a tenured Associate or full Professor with a distinguished research profile in this field and excellent administrative and organizational skills; they will be expected to advocate for FDI, and champion African & African American Studies in general, before the College administration and the university community.  The Director will work with School of Arts & Sciences administration and the Office of Advancement to develop additional resources.

The Director will report to the Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences in consultation with an executive committee of faculty associates; they will also hold a faculty appointment in an associated humanities or social science department in the School of Arts & Sciences.

Candidates should submit the following application materials:

  • Letter of application
  • Curriculum vitae
  • A two-to-three-page statement about the role of African & African American Studies in academia in general and in the on-campus life of a university.
  • Names and contact information for three references; these individuals will not be contacted without permission.

Please submit all materials online at www.rochester.edu/faculty-recruiting/positions. Review of applications will begin December 10, 2018 and continue until the position is filled.  For further information, contact the search committee at [email protected].

The University of Rochester, an Equal Opportunity Employer, has a strong commitment to diversity and actively encourages applications from candidates from groups underrepresented in higher education.
